Author! Author! 2021

September 22              530pm-7pm

Miche Cafe
We enjoyed an amazing evening of poetry as we welcomed 2 local authors and poets:
RHONDA GANZ - Winner of the ReLit Award for Poetry 2018 and nominated for the 2018 Victoria Butler Book Prize, and
JAMES SUMMER - 2021 Youth Poet Laureate for the City of Victoria.

Rhonda Ganz

Rhonda Ganz’s first collection, Frequent, small loads of laundry (Mother Tongue Publishing) won the Relit Award for Poetry. The book was also a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and the Victoria Butler Book Prize.

Her poems have appeared in The Malahat Review, Rattle, Room, Harvard Design Magazine, on city buses as part of Poetry in Transit and many anthologies, including Sweet Water: Poems for the Watersheds, Poems from Planet Earth, Rocksalt, Force Field: 77 Women Poets of BC,  Erotic Haiku: Of Skin on Skin and Voicing Suicide.

She has been a featured reader at Planet Earth Poetry in Victoria, Poets Corner, Twisted Poets and Word on the Street in Vancouver, The Portfolio Reading Series and WordStorm in Nanaimo, and at the inaugural Galiano Literary Festival.

She reads crime fiction, watches Judge Judy, and needle felts fancy hearts in the Victoria home she shares with a quiet man and a cat on its third life.

James Summer

James Summer began writing poetry in his junior year of high school when he joined Vic High School’s slam poetry club, and became president of the slam poetry club in his senior year.

In January of this year, he was announced as the 2021 Youth Poet Laureate for the City of Victoria, co-sponsored by the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) and the City of Victoria.

He's participated in such showcases as LimeLight, Vic Voices, and Hullabaloo, as well as various open mic events.

He hopes to bring his love of this artistic medium to other youth in the region, and help provide a safe space for those who want to express growth, pain and love through the written and spoken word.

“Poetry has helped me cope with feelings of loneliness and memories of a bittersweet childhood. As a transgender individual and as Youth Poet Laureate, I hope that I can bring awareness about the topic of being transgender and to have important conversations about stigma and labels.”
