Alison Spokes was born and raised in Houston, British Columbia and
currently resides in Victoria, British Columbia. She is a self-taught
artist who began working mainly in pencils, but found her niche
painting faeries in digital media.
"Drawing is something that has always come easy to me, but I
lacked the passion for it until I discovered the world of faerie."
— Alison Spokes
Alison’s obsession with faeries began shortly after her first visit to
Vancouver Island in 2002 when she purchased a deck of faerie oracle
cards from a local bookstore.
"My intentions, when I bought the cards, were for use rather than
for the artwork, but the imagery in the cards became this rabbit
hole into the wonderland that is 'faerie,'" she says.
Although Alison maintained her interest in myth and faeries, the
years between 2002 and 2008 were preoccupied working on her
Bachelor of Arts degree, which did not leave a lot of time for
hobbies of any kind. In 2008 she graduated with majors in
Anthropology and Psychology. In 2006, Alison got the idea to try
digital media from her sister who was creating amazing manga
characters in Adobe Photoshop. After years of dabbling and testing
techniques and software, but never really completing anything,
Alison was finally inspired in January 2010 to complete a series of
pieces she calls "Enchanted Insects."
This series is currently in progress.
